Apple said to be scaling down self-driving Apple car features

Autonomous-vehicle capabilities would be more akin to Tesla’s, according to a new report

Apple Inc. reportedly has scaled down its effort to make an autonomous electric vehicle, working instead on an EV with “limited” self-driving features, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing people described as familiar with the company’s plan.

Moreover, an Apple AAPL, +0.67% car would only be introduced in 2028 at the earliest, Bloomberg said.

The company has switched to developing a car with a more rudimentary set of self-driving features, more in line with Tesla Inc.’s TSLA, +0.16% advanced driver-assistance systems for highways, the report said. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.

It is possible that the company could reconsider the project altogether, the Bloomberg report suggested.

Apple has been rumored to be developing an autonomous car for many years. As recently as 2021, the tech giant was said to be deciding between developing a fully self-driving electric car and a vehicle with fewer self-driving capabilities. At the time, the company was said to have decided to focus on the fully autonomous option.
