The outage that hit Twitter Inc. TWTR on Thursday morning was caused by a problem with the social media platform’s internal systems.
The outage started just before 8:00 am ET, according to the Downdetector website, which tracks outages and visitors to Twitter saw an “error” message. By 9:03 a.m. ET the platform was back up. “We had some trouble with our internal systems that impacted many of you globally,” tweeted the Twitter Support at 12:37 p.m. ET. “Sorry for the interruption,” it added. Twitter shares ended Thursday’s session down 1.3% at $36.27, outpacing the S&P 500’s SPX 0.3% decline. The company’s stock is down 16.1% this year, compared to the S&P 500’s 20.5% decline.
