Rejoining the Paris climate agreement is one of many executive actions President Joe Biden will take on day one of his presidency.
FRENCH PRESIDENT Emmanuel Macron welcomed the U.S. back into the Paris climate agreement after President Joe Biden was sworn into office Wednesday.
“I welcome the return of the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement: Welcome back!” Macron tweeted after sending “best wishes” to Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris “on this most significant day for the American people.”
“We are together,” Macron tweeted. “We will be stronger to face the challenges of our time. Stronger to build our future. Stronger to protect our planet. Welcome back to the Paris Agreement!
“It is together that we can succeed in meeting the challenges of our time. It is all together that we can change the climate situation by taking action for our planet,” the French president continued.
On the first day of his presidency, Biden will sign multiple executive actions mostly aimed at undoing policies put in place by his predecessor, including one that will have the U.S. rejoin the Paris climate accord. Biden will sign a notice that will be sent to the United Nations later Wednesday and the U.S. will officially become party to the agreement in 30 days.
The U.S. joined the agreement under former President Barack Obama in 2015, but former President Donald Trump formally withdrew from the agreement in 2017.
